Fugle - akvarel

Bird sketches
When looking at the stuffed birds my attention was drawn to the sparrows. I liked the design on their wings and thought it would make a good picture which it did in water color. However, after having drawn the sparrow in pencil, I wasn't sure it was the bird I wanted to use for the etching. I looked at the birds once again today and thought the kingfisher in flight was just the one I needed as it showed action and would say more in the etching.

Etching
Etching is hard work. I learnt that it is important not to out line the subject but to rather build up the picture through different strokes as this makes the object seem more life-like. Following are the sketches I drew and used for my Kingfisher etching.

Billedtavle 22/09/11
Making the billedtavle was an interesting experience. At first I tried making a picture out of all the individual pictures. I had the flying birds on top, rock an statue pictures on the left, water pictures on the bottom etc. but somehow it was not working. This is instead what it ended up as from left to right - blues, greys and whites, then oranges and yellows going into greens. There are also horizontal lines, vertical lines, and sets of big round eyes that help a person look around the board.

Collage process 28/09/11
A collage is formed when pictures are taken out of their original context and put together to form a single new composition. In these collages I have used more and less depth by having a foreground, middle-ground, and background making the motif farther way smaller as well as over lapping pictures.
I was looking through different magazines and encyclopaedias when I saw some modern art, interesting designs, and ballet dancers and I got the idea for both of my collages. One developed into a picture with the theme of hope and a "safe return home", with a flock of swallows being the main feature. The swallows are guiding a ship safely into harbour and out of the darkness that is enveloping it.
The other collage developed a theme of freedom and movement with dancers and birds sharing the leading role in a dance with nature in the form of a waterfall. This is then offset with a feather on the right side.
Bellow is part of my work process.
The final collages and some others I made.

Linocut
For this assignment we had to make a collage including the subject birds and space.
The bird collage in which I included swallows, a ship etc. was created with linocut in mind. I used this as my reference point while working on it. The theme was hope and a safe return home. I show this by using circles with 2 differently colored skies. The ship is following the swallows from the darkness and storm into blue skies and calm waters and ultimately home. The birds are flying in a spiral which shows forward movement. The circular shape continues throughout the picture and I have added a spiral in the linocut to emphasize that even more.
